Horse wellness reset in person

Bring your horse to me for the day for a whole horse evaluation and reset

I look at the whole horse and all human and management factors in finding the root causes of ilnesses, injuries, and behaviour. If you are concerned your horse is in pain but can’t find where or why, are trying to manage or resolve a known health condition or injury but aren’t making progress or your horse keeps re-injuring, you are struggling with behaviour or training, or want a horse wellness reset, I can help.

• Are you concerned your horse has underlying pain?

• Are you following a treatment or rehab plan but it either isn’t working or the plan itself is causing your horse problems?

• Does your horse keep re-injuring or returning to illness?

• Are you stuck with hoof rehab or persistent body misalignments?

I offer whole horse evaluations at my yard in West Sussex, UK, where you can bring your horse for us to spend a half or full day delving deep into the root causes of the signs you are seeing and how we can remedy them.

Persistent pain, re-injuries, and behaviours can mostly be traced to dysfunction and discomfort in the body that is related to habitual posture and movement. I help address this by defining the habitual postures, removing blocks to improvement in the feet and teeth, and giving you exercises and lifestyle changes to do with your horse back at home.

This is for you if:

• You want to understand and address the deep roots of your horse’s health and wellbeing

• You are looking for an approach that looks at the whole horse and all the connections, rather than treating body parts in isolation

• You are committed to following a long-term process to help your horse that includes changes to their lifestyle, management, and exercise

• You prioritise your relationship and how your horse feels

Please note whole horse evaluations are not suitable for urgent or emergency cases - contact your registered vets now if this is the case.

Meet Lily

Hi, I’m Lily, I have been a vet since 2016, initially in general mixed practice, and over the last few years I have changed my approach. As well as my patients, my own horses, particularly Sunny and Beau (pictured here) have taken me on quite a journey and have guided me through developing this new approach.

My passion is helping people and animals to live their best life together by nurturing their all-round wellbeing and unique partnership. I am fascinated by all aspects of wellbeing from how the body functions in health and disease to how we all learn, think and feel, and how all of this is intertwined. I want to help people on their journeys of discovering how to keep horses’ bodies and minds healthy, comfortable, active and engaged and to explore the integral role of both the horse’s and our emotions in all of this.

Developing a whole horse approach to health and wellbeing has taken me studying all over the world, particularly the US. I am the only vet in the UK who is a Postural Rehabilitation practitioner. I practice dental occlusal equilibration, which is far more than just floating teeth to remove sharp points - it restores jaw alignment and function, which affects hoof and whole body alignment and function. I also practice rehabilitative barefoot trimming, various forms of postural reset exercises and bodywork, saddle fit evaluation, and ethical behaviour modification.

I look forward to meeting you and your horse!

What types of case is this for?

  • If your horse is showing signs or behaviours that you are concerned might be indicative of underlying pain, this is definitely worth investigating.

I can help you to identify whether and where your horse might be in pain. I don’t provide extensive diagnostic imaging here, but instead look at whole body connections and other factors such as emotional and lifestyle factors that contribute to pain.

In can advise on next steps in a diagnostic process, and a whole horse approach to alleviating pain.

  • Asking the question why did your horse get injured in the first place is important for return to comfort and function.

If your horse is either not recovering as expected from injury or keeps re-injuring, this is especially the case.

I can help you to work backwards to why this may have happened in the first place, and what is needed for your horse in terms of postural and movement habits that need to be addressed, as well as lifestyle or management changes, medical or husbandry interventions, and remedial exercise, and coach you on how to carry these out.

  • I can complete a horse wellness reset involving evaluating and addressing dental and jaw function, hoof comfort, structure, and function, and body posture and movement.

There may be blocks to your horse’s full all-round health and wellbeing or recovery from injury and illness that I can identify and address.

  • A species-appropriate lifestyle that attends to your horse’s physical, mental, emotional, and social needs is necessary for all-round health and wellbeing and good healing.

I can help coach you through making lifestyle and management changes that are practical for you to sustainably do in your unique situation, help you with tailored nutrition plans, how to deliver feed and forage for postural support and enrichment, coach you through recognising when your horse’s hooves need a different approach, and much more.

  • If you are having miscommunications with your horse that mean carrying out a plan is proving difficult, I can help to coach you through finding the deep rooted causes and then improving your relationship and communication.

Common scenarios include foot handling, medication administration, coping with box rest, and cooperating with and enjoying exercise.
